Packing Update November 5th, 2020

Due to Covid restrictions packing will need to be different this year.  Confirmation class will be packing the baskets during class on November 11th. Christian Education families will be distributing baskets on the days to follow.  Unfortunately, we can’t have the mass of volunteers like years past. If you have any questions please contact Sara Wynn.

Outreach and Mission has been busy this fall with the Mobile Food Pantry and coat drive for World Relief.  Each event has remained true to its mission, but with small alterations in order to be safe in a time of pandemic.  Now it’s time to serve our community with Essential Baskets.

In years past, First Congregational Church prepared food baskets for distribution at Thanksgiving.  We began something different in November 2017. “The concern for our neighbors remains the same,” says Sara Wynn, chairperson of the Outreach and Missions Committee of the church.  “The way we are showing it is different; by doing Essentials Baskets.”

The Essentials Baskets will be made up of household items like detergent and paper products and personal hygiene items.  The advantage of the essential supplies it that they are not perishable and they are harder to come by for those needing assistance.

“SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funds will not cover dish soap or disposable diapers,” says Sara Wynn. Church members noticed that there are many groups supplying food at the holidays, and that not every family can use a whole turkey or a gallon of milk.

This year our goal is to fill 150 baskets.  These baskets will benefit ten local organizations including: Bethany Children & Families, Moline; Healthy Families (Child Abuse Council), Moline; World Relief, Moline.

“We appreciate the generosity of the congregation as the increase in baskets means an increase of expense.” says Sara Wynn. “With each basket estimated at $50, our goal is to raise $7500 to cover the cost of this mission.”

What will look different this year is the Essentials Baskets assembly.  The current plan is to have staggered assembly times in the church basement by teams of children, youth and adults over two days, Saturday November 14th and Sunday November 15th. Then the supplies will be delivered by church families to mission partner agencies. “We want to help the children and youth see the connection of the work we are doing and our mission partners,” says Becca Peterson, Director of Family Ministry for the church.

Please join us in providing essential hygienic needs to those who have to choose between buying food or laundry soap. Contribute by check designated to Essentials Baskets online by clicking below.
